Xbox 360: Kodu Game Lab Impressions

xboxboxartI did it! I designed my own game. Yup, yup, programmed it and all. Well not really in the traditional sense but I did have a lot of control in the process.

Kodu Game Lab is a new visual programming tool designed to make games, it’s easily accessible to older kids and adults of all ages and is now readily available on the Xbox LIVE marketplace in the Community Games section for 400 MS points.

Last night, I decided to give Kodu Game Lab a chance and within five minutes I had a grip of the controls and basis of the game design mechanics without even going through the tutorials. I laid down land, built roads, added an enemy UFO that traveled on a set path and would explode when hitting a playable fish character. It was a real blast playing around with all the options, the effort the team behind Kodu has put in is outstanding, because I know if I was more into game development or a bit younger I could see myself spending hundreds of hours with this tool.

I’m looking forward to play around with it some more tonight and getting deeper into all the functions of the software. For more information on Kodu Game Lab visit the official Xbox.com page or the official Microsoft Research blog.

Excellent review. Been waiting to read one, since I saw it release on the Community Games section. I remember watching the demo from CES 09 and finding it really interesting.

Thanks for the comment. It’s worth the purchase, you can definitely get your money out of it if you have a creative mind.

I tried it and didn’t get it at all. I couldn’t make anything or even make the game start.
